After an experience of almost 22 years in the field of theatre, music and receiving various awards as a director and also for set designing, light effects, background music for popular plays such as Ghashiram Kotwal, Lekure Udand Zali, Khadashtak, Kala Vazir Pandhra Raja, Chaudawa Mazla (Neil Simon), Shitu etc his soul  felt incomplete as his dream to start a school for performing art was haunting him for a long time. He always felt that children must take basic lessons in performing art along with school education at an early age to help them grow and become a responsible citizen. With this sole aim he started ‘Kalangan’ Centre of Performing Arts in 1996. Today with the efforts of its staff, Committee members and a trust shown by parents ‘Kalangan’ has become a premium institution in Goa.  Rajendra along with his team worked hard to take this Institution to National level by inviting legendary artists such as Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma, Pt. Birju Maharaj, Kishori Amonkar, Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, Dr. L. Subramanyam, Leela Samson to name a few, to Kalarang festival which is held annually in order to provide an opportunity to Kalangan students as well as Goans to experience the enthralling performances and learn from these great artists. He feels his experience in this field has helped him to become a successful film maker and a better human being.  He is known for making highly acclaimed and popular films in Konkani and Marathi language and has won State Awards for all his films and a National Award twice

About Goa

Goa has attracted attention of many people from India and around the world because of its natural beauty and tourist attraction. Rightly called a tourist paradise, Goa boasts of magnificent scenic beauty along with the architectural splendors of its temples, churches and old houses. Legend says that this “Pearl of the orient” was actually a land recovered from the sea by Lord Parashurama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

Goa besides all the other attractions has one more thing to offer, its rich cultural heritage. Goa has been the birth place of artistes of great repute in the field of music and theatre such as Lata Mangeshkar, Kishori Amonkar, Jitendra Abhisheki, Dinanath Mangeshkar to name a few.

Art

Art is perceiving beauty, and this very perception is a special faculty of the human mind. Art activity is exclusively human. On a higher plane, art is awareness of yourself, it gets merged with happiness. It enables us to look at things with added perspective.

Art, inherent in the individual leads to the development of moral and ethical principles, enlightens approach and a structuring of aesthetic sensibilities. Art is a catalyst for change. It is intoxicating, redeeming and transforming.

Art should also be considered as the fourth basic need of man, without which he is worse than an animal. “ Sahitya Sangita Kala Vihinh Sakshat Pashu Vishana Hinh” as goes the Sanskrit Shloka.

Kalangan aims to promote the study, practice and knowledge of music in Goa, and the neighbourhood. The institute helps the citizens to appreciate the values of past legacy and enables them to achieve competence in self expression.

The regular musical programmes conducted under each faculty apart from the curricular teaching activities to enhance growth of musical talent and to provide exposure and encouragement to our students. The education provides the students opportunitites to assert themselves in their chosen field. Selected students perform for annual day function on 14th November every year.

Programmes in collaboration with Kala academy, west zone cultural centre, Udaipur, DIRECTORATE of ART & CULTURE, Goa and other groups is also conducted for preservation, development and promotion of cultural activities.
